Paul Skilleter - a brief biography

Specialist motoring writer Paul Skilleter was born on the Isle of Wight, Great Britain, in October 1945 and his further education included three years at the Bournemouth College of Art where his studied photography and cinematography. In April 1966 he joined Motor magazine as a staff photographer (see My Story), transferring to the newly-established Thoroughbred & Classic Cars magazine in 1974 as a photo-journalist. He went freelance in 1977.

Already editor of the Jaguar Drivers' Club monthly magazine, in 1975 Paul's first book was published Jaguar Sports Cars In 1976, this won for him the Montagu Trophy for the year's best-researched motoring book and remained in print for over 12 years (a new edition is now under preparation). It was followed by Jaguar Saloons, another major work, while he also wrote two Collector's Guides (on XKs and E-types) and a history of the Morris Minor - a motoring best-seller. More recently, Paul joined forces with another leading writer on Jaguar, Philip Porter, to produce the award-winning official biography of Jaguar's founder, Sir William Lyons.

During the late 1970s Paul conceived a DIY magazine for the classic car owner and formed a company (PPG Publishing Ltd) with two colleagues, Gordon Wright and Peter Hart, to launch Practical Classics in 1980. Within ten years, Practical Classics became Britain's best-selling classic car magazine, a position it holds today (it was sold to EMAP in 1989). Also in the 1980s, two other magazine titles were launched by PPG Publishing: The Automobile now continues in other hands, but Paul retains an interest in Jaguar World Monthly (founded in 1988 as Jaguar Quarterly) and is Managing Editor.

Today, Paul Skilleter writes every month in Jaguar World Monthly. JWM covers both modern and classic Jaguars, also going back to Swallow and SS. Every aspect of the marque is covered, including descriptions of new models, historic and classic Jaguars, restoration and maintenance from 'Mk IV' to XJ8, and Jaguar people - not to mention hundreds of used Jaguars for sale and many specialist advertisements (see link at right).

Being handled in the UK by Paul is a MAJOR new publication on Swallow and SS Cars - 'The Forerunners of JAGUAR in Australasia and S.E. Asia' by John Clucas and Terry McGrath. 25 years in the making, this has 456 pages, almost 1000 cars and more than 1000 never previously published photos. Only 500 copies have been printed!

Paul's latest project is the story of the famouse Scottish racing team Ecurie Ecosse that was published in November 2007, while also planning a series of pictorial Jaguar books for 2008.

Also available from late January 2008 is 'Cat out of the Bag'. This book gives an insight into a little-known yet exciting and innovative period in Jaguar history. It’s a fascinating and very personal account by Peter Wilson of life inside Jaguar’s competition department in the 1960s, a time when it was still very active even though the official works team had withdrawn after the 1956 season.
